Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and Aabar Investments PJS hosted a successful benefit dinner on 9 November 2011 attended by MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Driver Michael Schumacher. The exclusive event was in support of the Special Care Centre of Abu Dhabi.

 

Schumacher was greeted by Arbind K. Shrestha, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and Mohamed Badawy Al-Husseiny, CEO of Aabar Investments. Students from the Special Care Centre also welcomed the seven time world champion with a thank you card and frame handmade by the children themselves and accompanied by Reem Al Fahim, vice chairperson and head of the executive committee of Special Care Centre. Guests then enjoyed an exquisite four-course dinner designed by guest Chef de Cuisine Jean Paul Lourdes.

 

In a brief pre-dinner speech, Michael Schumacher expressed his dedication to supporting children throughout his career having previously supported Special Care Centre locally and acting as an ambassador for UNESCO internationally. Arbind K. Shrestha, general manager of Shangri-la Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi expressed similar sentiments, “We have supported Special Care Centre of Abu Dhabi since our opening, and are honoured to have Michael Schumacher’s support as well.  This charity is an inspiration for everyone who has witnessed firsthand the results of their superb educational programs.”

Special Care Centre of Abu Dhabi is a non-profit organization that has provided education and therapeutic services for children with special needs in Abu Dhabi since 1989. Currently operating at full capacity of 68 enrolled students, the school has made plans to expand to a purpose built campus that will accommodate 400 students with mild to severe disabilities.
