Ghantoot’s Argentine ace, Oscar Colombres, scored four goals in the first Golden Cup match today (Tuesday), to help them defeat a talented ADCB team, 6-4.

The four chukker contest, the first of Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club’s competitive tournaments this season, was played out at a relentless pace which saw both sides desperate to record the win.

Colombres, who immediately demonstrated his team’s intentions by claiming two goals in the opening chukker, said he was both relieved and delighted to win the clash, which could have gone either way.

“It was a very intense and evenly-matched game and we are very pleased that today it went our way,” said man of the match, Colombres. “Ghantoot started well in the first chukker, we were literally on fire and then ADCB were on fire in the second chukker and we released we had a real battle on our hands.

“In the third chukker we all settled down a little and it was far more even and then we just managed to get the upper hand in the fourth chukker.”

Colombres’ third and fourth goals game in the second and fourth chukkers, while Ghantoot’s new Argentine professional, Jorge Cernadas, scored a goal in both the first and second periods.

Emirati player, Ali al Marri, drove the ball between the posts for ADCD in the second chukker, while another new Argentine player, Bruno Tassara, opened his UAE account in the third chukker and Gonzalo Azumendi added to his side’s scoreline in both the second and third quarters.

“You have to give the new guys credit,” said Colombres. “They only arrived recently from Argentina and they managed to get on the scoresheet with only one practice session each.”

Ghantoot now face ADAC on Thursday (December 22) while ADCB will take on the ADAC team on January 4.

The final of the Golden Cup, which is held under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and presented by ADCB, will be held on January 6.

All Golden Cup matches are open to the public and free to attend.
