On the opening day of the 2012 Silver Cup, Abu Dhabi Polo team started the tournament with a spectacular win. They won beat Stuart Wrigley Rhinos team by eleven goals to five. Patricio Neves was the star of the show scoring a remarkable five goals and this allowed the Abu Dhabi team to control the game as they were in the lead for most of the game.
The second match was a tighter affair with Habtoor Polo sneaking a 5-4 victory over Ghantoot during a tough meeting. Habtoor Polo started in a hurry scoring two goals at the start of the first chukka. Ghantoot responded with two goals of their own in the second chukka and by the end of the third chukka it was 3-3 folloing a great goal by Francisco Elizalde. After the fourth chukka the teams were still inseparable with four goals apiece. The game entered the overtime chukka and after a few plays Habtoor were awarded a penalty which Elizalde converted to win the game for Habtoor Polo.
The action last Saturday was just as exciting as Mahra Team saw off Bin Drai Polo in the extra chukka of the third game in the competition. Rashid Al Habtoor’s Mahra team had taken the lead early on. The second and third chukka had both teams fighting for the control of the game. Mahra certainly looked to have the advantage throughout the match having held a three goals to one advantage in the second chukka and four goals to two advantage in the third. The best moments of the match came in the last chukka. Two goals from Juanjo Brane evened the score up at four goals apiece and Nacho Gonzalez, with a 60 yards penalty, put Mahra on top again.
Bin Drai never gave up and replied in the next play. From a Mahra defensive play, the ball rebounded into a horse and Brane took advantage of the opportunity to extend the game to extra time. After some great action and superb skills in the overtime period a goal by Guy Gibrat, gave Mahra the victory by 6 to 5. With this victory Mahra Polo Team joins Habtoor Polo and Abu Dhabi at the top of the leaderboard with one win each.
