The Dubai Sports Council (DSC) has urged residents and corporates in the emirate to support its initiative surrounding the celebration of “World Day for Physical Activity” to be observed on April 6.
The DSC has gone a step further by exhorting individuals and the corporate sector within Dubai to get involved in its planned celebrations to be held from April 1-12.
Celebrated under the slogan “Together, Toward Happy and Healthy Life”, the World Day for Physical Activity will aim to get the society involved in a wide-range of activities targeting the entire UAE population.
The DSC initiative for physical activity from April 1 to 12 will be worked under the theme of “Dubai Gets Active” running through a cross-section of society.
The programme ties up well with Dubai asserting its position as one of the fastest growing and efficient cities in the world. Following the Dubai International Forum for Physical Activity that was held two years back here, there were several key recommendations, prominent of these being the launch of a social programme for physical activity while increasing specific areas allocated for physical activities in parks and public areas open to a cross-section of society.
The organizers have chalked out special programmes for society that include races, matches and other physical activities beside a specific 30 minutes reserved for physical activity daily.
Physical programmes will also be initiated in government and private companies in an attempt to get staff attracted to physical activities. Besides, workshops and lectures will be organized to educate make various strata of society on the importance of physical activity and healthy living.
Families too will be targeted by arranging special periodic physical activity programmes organized for them.
The highlight of the activities will be on World Day for Physical Activity on April 6, where special ceremonies will be organized to mark the occasion to coincide with the initiative laid out by the International Physical Activity Organization, “Agita Mundo Network”.
The World Day for Physical Activity has been celebrated since 2002 after the general director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) proposed the annual celebration in the first week of April to promote physical activity in the world.
The DSC has urged government and private companies to arrange internal events for their staff to mark the occasion of the World Day for Physical Activity and further details can be downloaded from the Dubai Pulse website: www.dubaipulse.ae.
As per studies released by the WHO, physical inactivity is the fourth largest killer in the world after blood pressure, smoking and diabetes. Obesity and high levels of cholesterol have been ranked fifth and sixth on the WHO charter of 20 reasons laid down.
Following findings of a study jointly conducted by the DSC and the Dubai Health Authority that a mere 34 per cent of Dubai residents are involved in physical activity of some nature, the DSC aggressively launched the highly-popular “Dubai Pulse Programme” that involves several activities for society including walking, cycling, swimming and running.
The hard work put in by the DSC has yielded instant results with the physical activity graph moving up by two per cent to a current 36.
Following the success of the “Dubai Pulse Programme”, the DSC launched a spew of activities ranging from walks in shopping malls to special programmes for even the aged to get involved. The Dubai Municipality stepped in and offered its facilities and provided physical fitness equipment to motivate various classes of society to practice outdoor sports.
The DSC has already launched efficient and strategic partnerships with tie-ups with enhanced common programmes with various corporates dealing with the health and education sectors so as to increase the level of social awareness on the importance of sports and a healthy lifestyle.
In addition, the DSC has plans to organize several activities in coordination with various government and private bodies in the near future aimed at attaining a healthy lifestyle while reducing the percentage of those afflicted with chronic diseases.
