Second most popular sport in Spain already “enjoys support” in the UAE from organisations like Royal Group, Mubadala, FCC, NBAD, says sport’s promoter
Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 organisers have today announced that the corporate-based, multi-sport event, to be held in the UAE capital this November, has just added the world’s fastest growing sport to the list of events it will hold at the three-day event – “Padel”.
Although there are competing stories as to the exact origins of the sport, it can certainly be said that Padel is a sporting “cousin” of tennis. Padel, however, is played out by two players, per team, on a smaller 20x10 feet walled court with a three-foot high net in the middle and played with specially modified “rackets” or padels – where the sport gains its name.
Already the second most popular sport in Spain, after football having pushed tennis into third place, Padel has seen its popularity grow rapidly, across the world, since the first international competitions were held in Uruguay in 1982.
Padel becomes the 17th sport to be held in an already packed sporting programme at the Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012.
“Padel is still growing in popularity here in the UAE, but its versatility as either an outdoor or indoor sport means it continues to attract more and more people to it, as it can be played at any time of the year,” says Luis Cervantes, manager of ‘Just Padel’, the company that has taken on the responsibility for promoting the sport here in the UAE.
“In fact, organisations like Royal Group, Mubadala, FCC, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, already have good level players playing Padel,” added Cervantes.
Welcoming the latest edition to the sporting calendar of events to be held as part of the three-day sporting festival at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012, CEO, Fanny Marcourt, added:
“We are extremely pleased to be the first sporting event to host a competitive Padel tournament in the UAE, which will also be the first tournament of its kind to be conducted at a Corporate Games event – worldwide. Padel is a welcome addition to the sporting programme of events we have planned and we are confident it will be a springboard for its growing popularity with the country and region.”
Offering a choice of 17 popular sports, including football, cricket, touch rugby, shooting, and basketball, teams mainly made up from employees of businesses and organisations, as well as university students from across the UAE, will compete over the Games’ ‘weekend’ period from 21-24 November.
Participants can enter any of the 17 sporting events as either as a team or as an individual and there are no restrictions applied on age, gender, disability, or overall skill level, so the event is truly open to all types of competitor.
To become an Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 entrant the fee – per person – is AED 495. For companies registering teams before the 30th June, for every 10 competitors registered they will receive an additional entrant for free.
The Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 is supported by Games Patron, H.H. Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Higher Education; Sports Patron, Subhait Khater, Captain of the UAE national football team; the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and other leading local sponsors. The event will run from 21-24 November 2012 at venues across Abu Dhabi including: Zayed Sports City (main venue), Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, and Al Forsan International Sports Resort, Abu Dhabi.
