The preliminary qualifiers for the second edition of the CBD Youth Athletics Competition will take off at the Dubai Police Officers Club from November 9 and 10.
This event is Dubai’s biggest athletics tournament for talented young athletes from public and private schools.
The second round of qualifiers will be held on November 23-24 November and the finals will take place on February 9, 2013.
It may be recalled that last week Commercial Bank of Dubai and Dubai Sports Council had come together for the second year to launch its 2nd edition of the ‘CBD Youth Athletics Competition’ under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council.
The aim of the competition is to elevate the quality of sports in Dubai by nurturing teamwork between various government departments, corporate sponsors and other partners.
Ultimately this will help Dubai’s athletes to achieve greater success on the international stage while also learning the values of fair play, the rewards of intensive preparation and the benefits of teamwork.
The competiton will be held in several age categories starting with boys and girls under-12, Under-15 and an additional boys’ categories for Under-17s.
To compete, participants must be registered at a public or private school in Dubai and they will be required to furnish a mandatory medical clearance certificate prior to enrollment.
For track events, the running distances will be 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m, besides the relay races. The field events include long jump, high jump and shot put.
The technical committee for the competition will comprise of senior representatives from the UAE Athletics Federation.
The mascot of the tournament is Maher, a Tmimah or desert cat and it was chosen due to its inspiring attributes of being fast, intelligent and agile - qualities which it shares with the athletes.
This competition embodies the vision of our government, led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to strengthen school sports into a springboard from which promising talents can blossom to carry our nation’s flag high on the world stage.
