The inaugural Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 concluded on Saturday with over 1,000 medals awarded to participating athletes, with organisers stating that, in only its first edition, the Games have already become the largest corporate games event to be held in the region, by participation.
Officially opened by Games Patron, H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education, at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, last Wednesday, this last weekend’s event offered up a festival of sport for competing teams in 17 different sports, with 70 companies registered to take part.
A total of 2,469 amateur athletes took part in the Games, which was held at the Zayed Sports City, Al Forsan International Sports Resort, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Paris Sorbonne University with the optional, Ladies Only event, at Zayed University, in Abu Dhabi.
Fanny Marcout, speaking at the closing of the event, said:
“For the first event of its kind in the UAE capital, it has surpassed all of our expectations and been a clear success, enjoyed by all. With the final figures now in, we can also make the claim that the Abu Dhabi Corporate Games is now the largest corporate-based sports event, by participation, in the UAE and region.”

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nayhan, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Senaat, NBAD, all other sponsors, assistants and referees, and of course the participants, for coming together and making this the most successful corporate games event ever held, in the UAE.”
Whilst teams were mainly drawn from employees and relatives of local and international businesses and organisations, as well as UAE schools and university students, in the UAE, participants also included people who had flown in especially for the Games; from as far and wide as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Canada, Germany, India, and the UK.
A total of 70 companies or organisations entered teams into the event, which saw over 1,000 individual and team medals won, over the course of the weekend, with the eventual medals table revealing the top three teams, overall, as:
In the separate Ladies Only tournament over 200 women took park in Basketball 3s, Volleyball and Soccer 5s, with Sharjah Ladies Club coming out on top, closely followed the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sport Academy, the main sponsors of the ladies only event.
With the Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 proving to be such a resounding success, the organisers have also announced that registration for next year’s event has now opened.
“This year’s event, already having broken records for participation, shows that it is never too soon to get in touch regarding inquiries relating to do with participation or sponsorship – we look forward to seeing everyone involved this time again next year, and, of course, more people and companies next year,” added Marcout.
The Abu Dhabi Corporate Games 2012 was supported by Games Patron, H.H. Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister for Higher Education, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and ran from 21-24 November 2012 at venues across Abu Dhabi including: Zayed Sports City (main venue), Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, and Al Forsan International Sports Resort, Abu Dhabi.
