Al Ahli began the defence of their crown on a winning note with a 7-4 thrashing of Ajman Club, while President’s Cup winners Al Nasr fell to a 1-2 defeat against Ittihad Kalba in the opening round of the UAE Beach Soccer League at the Al Mamzar Beach Park here over the weekend.
Portuguese striker Nuno Miguel slammed in five goals for the winners while Hassan Ali and Kamal Ali added one each as Al Ahli dominated their opponents in the first match of the league.
Later, Ittihad Kalba stunned defending champions Al Nasr, who were playing without some of their stars due to injuries and ommisions due to previous red cards.
Miguel opened the score in the fourth minute and Kamal Ali made it 2-0 within a minute to help the defending league champions sit comfortably at the end of the first period.
Miguel then went on to score the next four goals for Al Ahli as the match looked headed to being a one-sided affair with the score reading 6-0.
It was then that new recruit in the UAE national squad Hassan Ali managed to pull one back for Ajman with just 17 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 6-1.
However, Al Ahli did not allow the goal to upset their plans as Hassan Ali came in as a substitute within three minutes of the third period only to see his namesake in the Ajman team get two quick goals and Adnan Abdul Rahman cap it off for the evening with the score reading 7-4 by the final whistle.
Al Shabab also commenced their campaign on an emphatic note with a 12-2 mauling of lowly Dibba Al Hisn.
Khalid Abdul Rahman scored two goals each in the first and third periods, while Mohammad Ismail, Yousuf Bilal and Khalid Abbas had a brace apiece and Zaid Abdo and Hassan Ali got their name once each for the winners.
Hard-working Obaid Rashid was the lone scorer for the visitors with goals in the first and second periods of play.
In the later matches of the round, Ittihad Kalba got the better of Al Nasr, who had to play without key players following a series of red card offences during last month’s ill-tempered Super Cup match against arch-rivals Al Ahli.
Al Wasl too opened their campaign on a winning note with a 4-2 result against Fujairah Club.
The 2013 UAE Beach Soccer League is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council.
