Zayed Sports City, the UAE’s premier sports and recreation venue, hosted the best bowlers from across the UAE and the region last night as the annual National Drilling Company (NDC) backed Ramadan Bowling Tournament returned to the capital for its fourteenth year. More than 140 youth and adult bowlers are anticipated for this year’s tournament, which runs from 24 June until 23 July 2014.

As Abu Dhabi is set to host the World Tenpin Bowling Men’s Championship from 4-15 December, the Ramadan competition is a prime opportunity for UAE men’s team bowlers to prove their value as members of the World Championship squad. Beyond the men’s team, with the World Youth Championships taking place in Hong Kong in August, the Ramadan Tournament will also be the UAE youth team’s last competitive appearance before they vie for the major title.

With an AED 145,000 prize fund and national team selection up for grabs, many of the UAE’s top bowlers are expected to participate. These include Hong Kong Open champion Hussein Al Suwaidi and Bahrain World Tour champion Shaker al Hassan, both Emiratis, and British female youth bowling prodigy Samantha Hannan. They will be joined by reigning champion Sayed Ibrahim, whose average score of 246.2 propelled him to victory in last year’s contest. In the graded division, league bowlers from around the emirates are expected to participate, using the talent around them to improve their play.

Commenting on the contest, Zayed Sports City’s General Manager Barry Bremner said: “It’s fantastic to see such a diverse group of bowlers taking part in this year’s Ramadan Bowling Tournament. We started the event fourteen years ago and since then it has grown into the country’s biggest and best bowling event, attracting a number of international bowlers. The tournament has been presented by NDC for the last four years, which demonstrates their commitment to bringing the community together during the holy month of Ramadan.
The Ramadan Bowling Tournament is always a busy event and will be a good practice opportunity for both bowlers and staff in advance of the Men’s World Championships which take place in December.”

The NDC Ramadan Bowling Tournament offers the largest prize fund in UAE bowling, AED 145,000, and is held from 9pm to 3am between 24 June and 23 July 2014 at Khalifa International Bowling Centre, inside Zayed Sports City.
